Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum file size I can transfer?
You can transfer files up to 100MB in total size per transfer. This limit ensures fast and reliable transfers for all users.
How long are files stored?
Files are stored temporarily and automatically deleted after the expiry period you set (1-30 days, default is 7 days). Once deleted, files cannot be recovered.
Is my data really encrypted?
Yes! When encryption is enabled, your files are encrypted directly in your browser using AES-256-GCM encryption before being uploaded. The encryption key never leaves your browser and is shared only via the URL fragment, which isn't sent to our servers.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required. ZapTransfer is designed for quick, anonymous file transfers. Just upload and share - it's that simple.
What happens if I lose the download link?
For security reasons, we cannot recover lost download links. The encryption key is only stored in the link you share, and we don't have access to it. Always save your download links in a safe place.
Can I password protect my transfers?
Yes! You can add an optional password to your transfers for an extra layer of security. Recipients will need both the link and the password to access the files.
What browsers are supported?
ZapTransfer works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. We use standard Web Crypto APIs for encryption, which are supported by all current browsers.
Is there an API for developers?
Currently, ZapTransfer is designed for web-based transfers only. We don't offer a public API at this time.
How is this different from other file transfer services?
Unlike most services, ZapTransfer uses true end-to-end encryption with a zero-knowledge architecture. We never see your files or encryption keys. There are no ads, no tracking, and no data mining - just secure file transfers.
What happens if my upload fails?
If your upload fails, simply try again. Make sure you have a stable internet connection and that your files don't exceed the 100MB limit. For persistent issues, contact our support team.
What's the difference between the password and the encryption key in the URL?
The encryption key in the URL fragment (after the # symbol) is used to decrypt your files - it's automatically generated and essential for accessing the files. The optional password is an additional security layer that you set manually. Think of it this way: the encryption key is like a unique lock that secures your files, while the password is like an extra padlock you can add. Recipients need the link with the encryption key to decrypt the files, and if you set a password, they'll also need to enter it. The key difference is that the encryption key travels in the URL fragment and never reaches our servers, while the password is verified server-side for additional access control.
